Brad Kaufmann June 11, 2008
Marshall, Mich. Junior Achievement of Southwest Michigan (JA) announced today that a fifth-grade class from Marshall Middle School in Marshall, Mich. is the winner of the organization's first “Pizza Project” contest sponsored by Hungry Howie's Pizza.
The contest is connected to JA's fifth-grade program, Our Nation, that teaches students about business, economics, and the free enterprise system. During the program, each class covers the “four P's” of marketing: selecting a pizza product, setting the price, determining how to promote it, and finally choosing the place to put their pizza store. The students each came up with an original pizza as well as a business and marketing plan. The entries were judged by representatives from the JA board of directors and staff.
This year's winning entry was “Cheezy Meaty” submitted by Mrs. Tobin's class at Marshall Middle School
The winning recipe will be created by Hungry Howie's, and all students at Marshall Middle School that participated in the contest will have the opportunity to sample the winning creation. Hungry Howie's will also sell the winning creation during the month of June and display the winning entry poster/business plan in their Marshall store. Hungry Howie's will donate 10 percent of their sales of the Cheezy Meaty pizza to Marshall Middle School. The winning pizza creation was selected from six total submissions that were judged on creativity, originality, practicality, and neatness as well as the overall presentation of their business plans.
Junior Achievement uses hands-on experiences to help young people understand the economics of life. In partnership with business and educators, JA brings the real world to students, opening their minds to their potential.
