Salad's the way to do it

Burnaby resident Eva Fong may not be a gourmet chef, but her prawn salad is really taking her places.

Fong scored a free, week-long culinary tour of Italy as the winner of Kraft's Pure Flavour Recipe Challenge yesterday. The contest's 10 Vancouver finalists were asked to concoct an original salad recipe on the spot using one of Kraft's new Signature dressings, as well as a secret ingredient - spot prawns.

Fong's salad, which incorporated Kraft's balsamic dressing, was voted the best of 10 entries by three judges, including Vancouver chef David Hawksworth.

The young mother of two, who works by day as a software consultant, said she was also a finalist this year in a Canadian Living recipe contest, but that this is the first time she'd made this particular recipe.

Fong's husband Quinton even took the day off work to see his talented wife in action. "My heart is pounding, I'm so excited for her and she worked really hard for it," he said. "I'm the luckiest guy in the world. She makes fantastic dishes day in, day out ... it's her passion." The trip to Tuscany, he said, will make a great 10-year anniversary gift.

Yesterday's finalists were selected from hundreds who entered the first leg of the contest by submitting original recipes online between April and May.
