Holland, MI — In my not-so-humble opinion, Hallmark missed a golden opportunity. At the same time I was interviewing for this job at the Sentinel, Hallmark was considering me as a card writer. There are three levels you have to pass to get that job and I passed the first two — the writing levels. My sour-grapes excuse is that the third level had little to do with writing. They wanted me to develop a business plan for an imaginary small business and come up with marketing strategies. Huh?
Hey Hallmark, I was just reading that the word orange has no rhymes in the English language, except MAYBE the phrase door hinge, so, I came up with this Halloween poem:
Vampire bats are black as night;
Jack-o’-lanterns orange.
One very spooky sound I’ve heard
Would be a squeaky door hinge.
OK, so it’s not exactly Edgar Allan Poe, but come on, I wrote it in under five minutes. After the limericks I wrote last week, I’ve been on a roll.
About a hundred years ago, there was a trend toward rhyming recipes. To read one, for bread, go to www.nebraskahistory.org. In the search box, type rhyming. The recipe will be at the top of the results that come up.
Of course, I had to try it myself. My rhyming recipe was inspired by Denise Hockett, who entered a contest on a blog called Matilda’s Family Cookbook Kitchen (www.cookbookpeople.com). The entries were all recipes in 20 words or less. I needed 66 words.
Meatloaf muffins? Such a thing?
Of course. I’m sure not bluffing.
Get a pound of raw ground beef
And box of Stovetop stuffing.
Preheat your oven at the start,
You’ll want it at three-fifty.
The rest of the ingredients
Will please you if you’re thrifty.
A cup of water and two eggs
Mix all four items in
Bake thirty-seven minutes with
Each muffin in its tin.
