Iron Chef comes to Naval Base San Diego
Commander, Naval Installations Command (CNIC) and Commander, Navy Region Southwest (CNRSW) will host an Iron Chef Competition for the Culinary Specialists' community at Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) Galley, Nov. 6. The event will begin at noon with welcome remarks by Capt. Ricky Williamson, Commanding Officer, NBSD. At 4:30 p.m., food enthusiasts are welcome to watch judging and award presentations. This culinary contest is part of the bi-annual CNIC Food & Beverage Conference held Nov. 5-7 at NBSD's Anchors Catering and Conference Center.
Competitors from CNIC's food services community include Navy culinary specialists who work in the galleys on base, chefs from civilian operated on-base facilities and culinary specialists from U.S. Navy ships.
"This special event will give culinary professionals from MWR, ashore galleys and the fleet an arena to demonstrate their superior skills in the art of food preparation," said Ed Labao, NRSW Dining Services Deputy Program Manager/Food Service Director. "There are nine four-person teams competing, and this is a great opportunity for culinary specialists and other food service professionals to build morale, teamwork and camaraderie," he added.
Celebrity Chef, Charlie Ayers, former executive chef for Google Inc., will travel from his hometown of San Francisco to introduce the teams and share his creed of 'eat, drink and be merry.' He will also give participants an autographed copy of his book, "Food 2.0."
Competitors will be provided items needed to prepare their culinary masterpieces including three secret ingredients to be announced during the competition.
"It's a challenge, especially using the secret ingredients, but, it is nothing that my team and I can't handle," said Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Teshowme Marshall, Captain of Team Four from Naval Base Point Loma's Galley. "You've got to have challenges to test your abilities and find out how you measure up," he added.
There will be seven judges who bring their culinary skills from the military and private sector to evaluate each dish on taste, knife work, cooking method, presentation and proper safety and sanitation. This will be a timed event and each team must prepare, cook, portion and present final recipes within the allotted time. Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded.
The CNIC Iron Chef Competition was held for the first time in November 2007 by Commander, Navy Region Southeast hosted by Naval Station Mayport.
"The event went very well and CNIC decided to hold another Iron Chef Competition in conjunction with the Food Service Conference this year," said Labao.
NBSD Galley will be closed from 1 - 4:30 p.m., but will open at 4:30 p.m. for food enthusiasts to view judging and awards presentations. All media outlets are invited to cover this fun and challenging competition.
