AMERICAN EGG BOARD NAMES THIS YEAR’S “AMERICA’S WORST COOK”
Mom who Struggles to Cook Frozen Vegetables Wins National Contest
Park Ridge, Ill. (November 17, 2008) – Many home cooks experience calamities in the kitchen every now and again, but what happens when catastrophes are the norm and the simple task of boiling frozen vegetables turns into a cooking disaster? You are named America’s Worst Cook! Ginger Anderson of San Diego, California, has been deemed the winner of the American Egg Board’s second annual “Search for America’s Worst Cook” contest. Ginger’s loving husband already considered her a top contender for this honor and spilled the beans about the time she boiled a box of frozen vegetables – literally, box and all – in an effort to win his affection.
Why search for America’s Worst Cook?
A 2008 survey from the American Egg Board found that 42 percent of respondents know someone who is in desperate need of cooking skills and 78 percent believe that Americans are worse cooks today than people were 50 years ago. To help wannabe cooks learn basic cooking skills – especially as more families are looking for ways to cut down food costs by eating more meals at home – the American Egg Board called upon its expert for preparing quick and affordable meals, the Guinness World Records “World’s Fastest Omelet Maker,” Howard Helmer.
According to Helmer, eggs are a perfect solution for novice home cooks like Ginger. “Not only are eggs easy to prepare, they are incredibly affordable and can be combined with almost anything already found in the refrigerator or pantry.” Eggs are also all-natural and provide high-quality protein that keeps families satisfied and energized both in mind and body throughout the day.
What Makes a Worst Cook?
Before they were married, Ginger tried to woo Daniel with a home-cooked meal that included a side dish of frozen vegetables. Wondering what was taking so long for dinner to get to the table, Daniel checked up on Ginger in the kitchen and found a puzzling sight: Ginger standing over a pot of boiling water that included “something green” and… chunks of cardboard.
Knowing that Ginger already considered the kitchen her “personal black hole,” and assuming the vegetables were not supposed to have chunks of cardboard floating in them, Daniel nervously asked Ginger how the meal was progressing. Ginger looked down at the pot of vegetables and replied, “well, the directions on the box said, ‘boil in pouch!’” Being the Worst Cook that she is, she did not realize that “boil in pouch” did not mean “boil in box.” Daniel decided to let her finish cooking the meal and the couple was later left fishing out chunks of cardboard from each bite and hoping the indiscernible traces of the vegetable box would perhaps provide some extra fiber. According to Ginger’s family and friends, this is but one incident in a long history of kitchen calamities.
Not a Worst Cook for Long!
After years of fearing the stove, Ginger will finally make up for all of those miss-the-mark meals. As the winner of the “Search for America’s Worst Cook” contest, Ginger will travel to New York City, where she will attend cooking classes at the Institute of Culinary Education, including a class dedicated to one of the most affordable and versatile foods in the refrigerator, the incredible edible egg.™
Ginger’s family will surely appreciate her new skills – her husband will no longer have to do all of the cooking, and her two young children will no longer have to be on the lookout for misplaced cardboard in their otherwise nutritious vegetables. With the know-how she will learn on her trip, Ginger will be preparing cardboard-free meals for her family, including easy and affordable egg dishes, in no time.
