Mayfield Dairy Farms produces 2008 MooFest winner's ice cream flavor
ATHENS -- Coffee-flavored ice cream with hand roasted hazelnuts and espresso-flavored chocolate pieces imported from South America -- that was the winning combination of yummy ice cream and delicious ingredients, judges decided at the 2008 National MooFest Homemade Ice Cream Contest.
Judges awarded Oak Ridge resident Alex Minge's entry, Moo-ionaire's Java, the grand prize at last year's National MooFest in Athens, Tennessee.
In addition to taking home $500 in cash, a Mayfield Dairy Farms gift basket and an ice cream churner, Minge's winning flavor is being produced this year by Mayfield Dairy Farms.
The novice ice cream creator got his inspiration from watching the Food Network. Having always enjoyed cooking and creating new food dishes, he though the contest would be a great opportunity to try his hand at ice cream, Minge said.
"After I won the contest, Scottie Mayfield contacted me about producing the flavor with a few minor changes," said Minge. "So we worked together to come up with the flavor that's being produced today."
Moo-ionaire's Java still features rich-tasting coffee-flavored ice cream, but unlike Minge's original version, the added ingredients are chocolate, caramel and hazelnut-filled chocolate truffles.
"Mayfield created a great new product," said Minge. "One that I will certainly buy."
MooFest, a celebration of the dairy industry that brought in more than 12,000 people to downtown Athens in 2008, will be held this year on Saturday, May 30. The festival will again feature the Homemade Ice Cream Contest.
Those interested in submitting recipes for this year's ice cream recipe contest should do so soon. Entry forms are available online at www.nationalmoofest.com and at the Mayfield Visitor Center.
Moo-Ionaire's Java, along with seven other new Mayfield flavors for 2009, is in stores now.
