Obama soon could be eating Shelly's asparagus recipe
Shelly Fisher of Hermiston was named a Pacific Northwest winner in RegionalBest.com's "Asparagus Lovers Unite for Obama!," a recipe contest to find the best asparagus recipe in America.
Fisher's recipe was "asparagus mac & cheese." Recipes were judged on taste, creativity and regional flair.
The contest was sponsored by RegionalBest.com, an online food marketplace that supports small food artisans, farmers and sustainable agriculture, to help President Barack Obama discover new ways to eat his asparagus. According to reports, asparagus is not one of Obama's favorite veggies - he'll only eat it when nothing else is available. The contest was launched in late spring on the heels of the organic vegetable garden being planted on the White House lawn.
"Michelle Obama is a champion of healthy food and living," said Marsha Cade, co-owner of RegionalBest.com, in a press release about the contest. "She has praised planting gardens and eating fresh vegetables, so we launched the contest to help her husband. It is a fun and lighthearted way to support her efforts and to bring more green to the White House. We think President Obama will love all of our winning regional recipes."
As a regional winner, Fisher's winning recipe, along with the seven other regional winners, will be sent to the White House chef. Grand prize winner in the contest was Amy McCoy of Rehoboth, Mass., with her recipe for a pancetta, asparagus and sundried tomato sandwich.
