4th Annual Diplomats Cooking Competition held

Foreign diplomats living in Beijing, broke out of the monotony of canteen food and set meals over the week-end. They got elbow deep into the 4th Annual Diplomats Cooking Competition. With demanding schedules, many rarely venture into the kitchen.

But after they donned the white cap and stepped into the competition, the diplomats proved that there's probably a little chef in all of us.

Shedding their standard business suits and dignified manner, these competitors seemed anything but newcomers at wielding the spatula.

The more than 60 participants are from the United States, French, Italian, Hungarian, Japanese and other embassies in China. The challenge the diplomats face is to cook one dish. It must have Chinese influences, but be prepared with foods from their home countries. Each diplomat is aided by a Chinese assistant, usually a master chef.

The competition was first held in 2006, with the aim of promoting China's culinary cuisine to the world. This year's theme is "Oriental Feast".

Organizers hope that the competition will prove to be the right recipe for creating a better understanding and warmer friendships.
