EDLINGTON is the place to be for Boxing Day dinner today – because the village children are the best when it comes to thinking up uses for turkey leftovers!
One of the village's primary schools has stunned TV chef Phil Vickery with its ideas for turkey recipes for the leftovers, taking the top two places in a national competition.

Edlington Victoria Primary School pupils Sophie Blackburn and Jack Howells were first and second in the turkey industry's British Turkey Kids Can Cook competition, and received their prizes at school.

Teachers were delighted to see both youngsters walk away with the prizes for the under 12s category in the contest, even though they are only eight.

The competition was for ideas for turkey recipes youngsters would like to see on the school menu -– but Jack's proud mum reckons as far as their family is concerned her boy has found how to make tomorrow's leftovers into a decent Boxing Day spread.

First-placed Sophie won the competition with her plans for turkey pasties.

Celebrity chef Phil said he felt the pasties looked great and used a nice mix of vegetables and turkey. Phil was so impressed he wanted to eat one there and then.

Sophie won a signed Phil Vickery cook book plus a Halford's voucher for a Carrera Girls Bike.

Second place Jack Howells also impressed Phil with his recipe for turkey farmer's pie. Phil thought this was a simple dish that looked really tasty and easy to make. Jack won a £50 voucher for a toy shop and a signed Phil Vickery cookbook.

Jack's proud mum Zoe reckons her eight-year-old boy has a good case for making the Christmas dinner tomorrow, with his new found top-notch turkey title on the table.

She said: "Jack's dad Steven is really into cooking, and I think Jack takes after him on that. He always offers to help him. He likes doing omelettes, shepherd's pies and baking.

"His dad cooks a lot of foreign food and Jack loves Mexican. We may have had turkey chilli or turkey curry for dinner on Boxing Day, but I think now it will have to be turkey farmer's pie."

Jack's recipe is made up of turkey mince, peas and carrots, with mashed potato on top.

He said he would like to be a chef when he grows up.

Breakfast television star Phil, who made his name on shows like Ready, Steady Cook, said: "Our only competition rule was that the recipe must contain at least two different vegetables – plus turkey of course!"
