Celebrity Chefs to Serve Competitive Food at U.S. Open. By Sumathi Reddy

Venus and Serena Williams aren’t the only ones who will be battling at the 2010 U.S. Open in Flushing, Queens.

The tennis tournament, which runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 12, will also feature some of the country’s top celebrity chefs in a cook-off. The chef who sells the most of their specially-created dish for the U.S. Open will win a $5,000 donation to the charity of their choice. The cooking contest will be held on Sept. 5.

The special dishes created by the celebrity chefs will be sold at the new Master Chef Café in the U.S. Open’s south plaza. The items will be available throughout the tournament, but during the cook-off all the chefs will be on site to work in the kitchen and offer cooking demonstrations.

The chef roster includes Spiaggia’s Tony Mantuano of Chicago; California and Las Vegas chef Susan Feniger; Florida’s Carmen Gonzalez; New York’s Jonathan Waxman; and Rick Moonen of Las Vegas. Here’s what they’ll be making:

Feniger: carne asada tacos and Yucatan pork tacos
Gonzalez: lobster roll, pulled pork sandwich, barbeque pork quesadilla, lobster and avocado terrine and flan
Mantuano: a spinash salad and antipasti platter
Moonen: a shrimp hot dog called Moon ‘N Doogie
Waxman: three paninos with various fillings
Masaharu Morimoto, of Iron Chef fame, will also participate in this year’s U.S. Open, serving sushi in the VIP and player’s lounges and luxury suites.
